Hip flexor pain that lingers for weeks or months is usually a sign that something deeper is being missed.


What People Think Is Causing front of hip Pain

Most people assume their hip flexors are:

  • Too tight

  • Overworked

  • In need of stretching

And while that can be part of the picture, it’s rarely the full story.

In fact, constantly stretching your hip flexors without addressing the root cause can keep you stuck in the same cycle:
Temporary relief → return to activity → pain comes back


What We Actually Look At First

When someone comes in with persistent hip flexor pain, we’re not just looking at the hip flexor itself.

We’re asking: Why is it getting overloaded in the first place?


Here are the most common reasons we see:

Limited hip extension (you can’t fully open your hip)

If your hip doesn’t move well behind you (especially during walking, running, or lifting), your hip flexors stay “on” longer than they should.

Over time, that leads to irritation.

Common signs:

  • Short stride when running

  • Low back arching to compensate

  • Tightness that never fully goes away

Poor Load Sharing with the Glutes

Your glutes are meant to do most of the heavy lifting.

If they’re not contributing effectively, your hip flexors try to help, but they aren’t “the ones” meant for the job.

This is one of the biggest reasons we see ongoing hip flexor pain in:

  • Runners

  • CrossFit athletes

  • Lifters

Core Control and Pelvic Position

Your hip flexors attach directly to your spine.

If your core isn’t providing enough control, your hip flexors often take on a stabilizing role instead of a movement role.

That extra demand adds up FAST.

Training volume (Too Much, Too Soon)

Sometimes the issue isn’t what you’re doing, it’s how much and how fast.

We often see hip flexor pain pop up when:

  • Mileage increases too quickly

  • Intensity jumps without enough recovery

  • Strength work is added on top of existing load


Why Rest Alone Doesn’t Fix It

Rest can calm symptoms, but it doesn’t solve the underlying problem.

If the same movement patterns and load demands are still there when you return, the pain usually comes right back.

That’s why so many people feel stuck.
